Thanks both. @timplanche - that definitely hasn't put me off reading it. I like having different views in mind when approaching something as it helps me to assess things more critically. As proverbs 18:17 says "In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross-examines." Thanks for the resource references. I have done a reasonable amount of reading on this in the past, but it was some time back. @BPK - looking forward to seeing some stats and your thoughts

Thanks for the feedback timplanche. I got horrendously side-tracked with other "interesting" reading and never made it to this book. I will have to pick it up soon, but read with your comments and possibly Dr Kantor’s in mind when he gets to a review

Unfortunately it is the Tyndale House version so I am guessing copyright would be an issue with that. What I found difficult was reading in a way that brought out the tone of the passage. It is one thing to read it, it is another to then give it some emotional emphasis and place stress where it was intended. I think this was perhaps also the best thing about doing it as well as the hardest, it made me think through things in that light. Trying to do the above whilst getting pronunciation correct was hard to juggle in places. The more I read out loud the easier that becomes, and I wonder whether it might contribute in some way to my fluency overall. The other issue I was having was the software I was using on my iPhone. This made cutting possible if I stumbled, but it definitely wasn’t an easy process. I sent you a message on b-Greek. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Another reason that that may help is some of the folk who are likely to come to this site more regularly will be hopefully more approachable if they show willingness to discuss things. As it is at the moment I think I would feel a bit awkward trying to start a random chat on there, although that probably says a lot more about me than the feature

Hi Benjamin, I am puzzling over this feature and am wondering how to best use it. I think we are in a small enough community at the moment that the chances of seeing someone on there are relatively low. Whilst a tad artificial, perhaps combine it with a topic at a given time so people can join in or just watch people hopefully sensibly discussing things. That seems a bit forced to me, but to get it going and to see whether it can be useful for folks, perhaps a bit of a nudge like that would help?

Sorry for the delayed response Jason. I know why you mean - I am learning slowly to be more competent at speaking but not there yet for fluency. I am introducing slowly some basic conversational sentences so we can slowly expand together

I am probably going to have to do the same with 2 Maccabees and Josephus’ Antiquities so that I don’t forget everything I have worked on in grammar and vocab. Not enough time in the day to keep rereading along with all the other books I have on the go

Yup, what you both are saying is why I am experiencing. I will need to focus on what I know I can do which will unfortunately be the text book and work to develop materials for the future. It will still be a great learning experience for me doing the text book supplemented by reading exercises and workbook, but far from what I had over-optimistically hoped for

Some very initial thoughts... it is huge! You can get it in two volumes that may make it more manageable but the version I have is daunting beyond belief! Photo with a couple of other books for reference of the size of this work another consideration is that in its print format you are going to struggle to find new interesting words based on English such as exclamatory phrases. Maybe when it becomes digitised The range of texts cited is huge, so there will absolutely be vocab in here not in the New Testament - my favourite is the Greek αἰβοῖ for a rough equivalent of "yuck" - found only in the 4th-5th century bc writer Aristophanes. I found this in another communicative work by the polis institute who I would advise you look up and decided to look it up as a test. Whether that is relevant though for first century koine is something you will have to think through. I personally don’t think this is useful for expanding vocab too much for the reasons above. It is too large, it is primarily of academic interest, LSJ is available in digital format and would be easier to use and search in my opinion and i bet cheaper! Checkout polis institute on their website or amazon and the Agros material on amazon in my opinion. have a look at the polis institute stuff. There is also intersesting stuff published that was used in early roman times to teach Greek/Latin with regular phrases and situations. I would need Benjamin to comment on their value and what they are called - I can’t find them in my amazon list right now. I don’t know your background in Greek. I am coming to this as someone who has read most of the New Testament and can do so comfortably now, some of The church fathers and am now (trying) to read Josephus‘ antiquities. My vocab range may therefore be wider than some, but the polis institute stuff has been great

Follow up question to this thread - gamma followed by an epsilon should be pronounced as a y... does this still happen for the final gamma in this word?
