Thomas, thank you for your thoughtful response––pure gold! You had me roped in from the start by mentioning Edwards and Piper. Furthermore, you articulated what I've been wrestling with of late––trying to pay equal attention to Greek and Hebrew. I think you're absolutely right and that this has slowed my progress considerably. As far as staying mainly with the Greek text, that's what I've tried to do––not spending a whole lot of time with grammars, etc while reading. I'm glad to get some confirmation on that approach. When I say "Reader's" edition I mean Greek/Hebrew texts that have contextual english glosses with inflections at the bottom of the page in a footnote (e.g. words that occur less than 25x in the NT). I only look at the footnotes when I'm stumped with a word I don't know or an unusual inflection, etc. I use the Tyndale House GNT and Biblia Hebraica. Lastly, I think what hit me with the strongest force was your encouragement to enjoy the Greek text for its own sake, to savor it, slow down and take a step back from the 'regimen' for a bit. I surmise I'll be deeply indebted to you for that suggestion. It struck a cord deep within. Thanks again for your encouragement. I'm eager to hear from others as well!
